If your teeth are spaced irregularly, you may feel uncomfortable about the look of your smile. Interdental gaps of varying sizes can make the teeth appearance crooked and ununiform. Still, there are cosmetic dental applications that can be used to correct the look of irregularly spaced teeth. Here are a few of them.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding uses a plastic material called resin to fill in the gaps between the teeth. The resin is actually added to specified teeth to widen them, closing in the interdental spaces.

The dentist applies the resin in a pliable state. As the dentist presses the resin bonding material against the teeth, they mold it into position. The resin is then hardened using a curing light. Once the bonding is complete, the space between the teeth is minimized and the teeth simply appear a bit wider. Since the bonding material is tooth-colored, it blends seamlessly with the natural tooth material.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a hollow cap that is placed over the portion of the tooth that is visible in the mouth. The sides of a crown can be sized a bit larger to help fill in the space adjacent to the covered tooth.

A tooth-colored crown may be fashioned from porcelain, resin, or porcelain-over-metal. The crown is designed from a mold of the mouth, so the shape of the device looks natural. Additionally, the actual coloring of the crown can be selected to match the patient's natural tooth color.

Orthodontic Treatments

An orthodontic treatment, such as braces or clear aligners, can also be used to evenly space the teeth and eliminate large dental gaps. The braces reposition the teeth using an archwire, brackets, and elastic ligatures. The archwire, which is connected to the brackets by the elastic bands, is manipulated to apply pressure that moves the teeth into the desired positioning.

Clear aligners are plastic orthodontic devices that fit over the teeth like a specialized mouth guard or retainer. The aligners are created from an impression of the oral cavity; they are customized to the exact orthodontic needs of the patient.

A series of aligners is prescribed to progressively straighten the teeth, eliminating unwanted gaps and moving the teeth into a uniform configuration. The aligners are clear and removable. Thus, they offer a discreet way to correct irregularly spaced teeth.

If your teeth have irregular interdental gaps, contact a cosmetic dentist in your local area to schedule an appointment.
